NBN - What is it? How will it impact you?

NBN is a term given to the topology of a carrier’s access network that utilises optical fibre and traditional copper infrastructure to deliver high bandwidth services. This hybrid infrastructure utilises VDSL across the copper to deliver what is hoped to be up to 50Mb/s to each customer.

The challenge of this topology is skill!

Today’s modern carrier networks rely on two main physical layer mediums; optical fibre & copper. Over the past 10 years we have seen many organisations train and become proficient at the installation and maintenance activities of fibre optic networks, but at the same time we have seen little investment in skill development for copper.

Copper network installation and maintenance activities are not related to Cat5 etc. They have their own unique challenges and installation processes and when combined with the technologies associated with the NBN, new skills are needed for anyone wanting to become involved.
Going forward, it is highly likely that to rectify the government’s prediction of a skills shortage of 25,000 in the ICT industries, improved training methods and targeted (accelerated) course will be needed.

Upon installation of the physical infrastructure we need to be very aware of the demands new access speeds will have on the core network of the controlling carrier. With an estimated access bandwidth increase of more than 20 times, carriers will require major core network upgrades and this will therefore present opportunities to organisations that provide design, consultancy, installation and of course equipment supply services, to such a network.
